As endurance athletes, we log the early morning intervals, push through grueling long runs, and chase the next personal best. But for too long, fueling those miles felt like a compromise: synthetic chemical powders that inevitably wreaked havoc on the stomach when the pace picked up.

​The breakthrough didn't come from a lab, it came from family heritage. Growing up in Colombia, Tatiana had been using pure, unrefined panela since childhood as a staple of natural, daily energy. When we introduced it to our own heavy training blocks back home, the difference was instant. Smooth, sustained energy with zero gut distress.

Ditching the gels in the Chicamocha Canyon

We didn't just test this fuel on casual weekend runs; we relied on it to survive the extremes. In 2024, I took on a grueling ultra-marathon in the thin air and brutal heat of Colombia's Chicamocha Canyon.

​Standing at the starting line, looking at the packed synthetic gels and bars I was supposed to live on, I realized I couldn't even stomach the taste of them before the race had even begun. Right then, I ditched the conventional fueling plan entirely. Instead, I mixed up pure panela the exact way Tatiana had always used it for natural energy since childhood, and relied solely on it to carry me through the massive vertical climbs.

​Even under that extreme physical stress, it went down perfectly, delivering smooth, steady energy with zero gut distress. It was the ultimate proof of concept, if a traditional family fuel could power me through the depths of the canyon from step one, it could power through anything.

From the south island to the starting line

The testing didn't stop in the canyon. Back home, we kept pushing the boundaries relying on that same raw energy to power through thousands of kilometers of sustained, multi-day endurance efforts across the entire length of the South Island.

​Panela Power is an independent, family owned New Zealand business born out of these real-world extremes. From racing grueling ultra-marathons and Ironmans, to pushing the pace on the rolling hills of the Boston Marathon, we’ve road-tested this fuel ourselves over countless hard kilometers. We built it so you can line up at your next start line with total confidence. No science experiments. Just real food fuel for real performance.

We are a small, independent family business based in New Zealand, driven by a passion for endurance sports and clean, whole-food nutrition.
